Chapter 15
Grace
I followed quietly behind Curtis as he led me by the leash down the hall, and then down the stairs. When we arrived at the back door, Lucas was waiting for us once again. Without a word, he opened the back door, and waited for us to pass.
He winked at me, again, earning another scowl from me. I was beginning to think he did that just to see my response. He enjoyed it too much.
Silently, we boarded the same helicopter as before. The other stayed silently on the ground. Were the others not coming with us?
âVegas?â Curtis asked, looking at Lucas, as we raised above the house.
It looked much larger from up here. Judging by the surrounding area, I had to wonder if we were in Hollywood, or one of those other richy rich places. Did we take over a movie starâs house? That would be kinda cool. It would have been kind of ironic if that Twilight chick had been killed by the real deal vamps.
âDone. The men were sure it was empty though.â
Curtis gently dragged his hand down the back of my head. I turned to face him, and he did the same down my cheek with the back of his knuckle. He smiled softly, so I leaned into his embrace.
âIf they did take Carter, they didnât wait long to question him. He may have divulged that we knew they were there.â
From the corner of my eye, I could see Lucasâ eyes scrunch slightly, as he tried to follow the subtle hint Curtis was giving him. The one telling him what line he gave me. I helped him out and pouted. Lucas finally caught on. I had to close my eyes to hide the eye roll. Moron.
I swear, the bigger the egos, the smaller the brains men had.
âAnd the other cities?â
âThey have been contacted. The attacks have already begun.â
And just like that, flashes flooded through my mind. First, the White House. Then a casino on the strip. Finally, Timeâs Square. The tear slipped out on its own. Curtis wiped it without a word.
So many people were going to die tonight. And it was just the beginning. I listened as they discussed the plan for the other cities over the next few weeks. California had not been the end goal, it seemed. It had just been where they planned to make their strong hold.
Would we be back to the house in time for me to send a warning message to Hill? Surely Deacon could have his guys there? Or maybe those wolf-shifter-guys?
Unlike the last time we flew, I was left mostly alone. It was kind of nice. Curtis kept one arm around me protectively, almost like he was trying to show me some type of affection. I lapped it up like the dog I was used to being treated as.
Well, I guess I should say like the cat.
The entire ride, I kept my head on his shoulder. Pretty much giving him the same treatment. I really did appreciate the reprieve from other things.
